Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander a good car?

Yes — the 2014 Toyota Highlander earns a 4.8/5 user rating and an 8.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, and value for money, and they also like the spacious interior and useful features. That lines up well with its family-crossover mission: it is built to handle school runs, errands, and weekend trips without feeling plain or forgettable. You should also keep in mind that some shoppers wish for better fuel economy and seat comfort, and the lack of modern touches like push-button start and a sunroof may matter if you want a more contemporary feel.

The market also shows 32.0% good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with repeated praise for reliability and comfort. The expert review also describes it as a vehicle that feels capable and competent for both everyday use and weekend driving, which supports the idea that it is built to be counted on over time. The cost-effectiveness commentary adds that it delivers a lot of content for the price, which can help ownership feel worthwhile.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the core reputation and more about finding a well-kept example, since comfort and feature content can vary by trim and condition.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota Highlander?

At 57.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the equipment and safety features work as expected. Because this is a family vehicle, interior wear and seat comfort are worth checking closely too.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base LE trim includes seating for 8, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, a backup camera, and Bluetooth hands-free calling, while the LE Plus adds three-zone climate control with rear climate toggles, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and SofTex leatherette seating. The XLE adds navigation, leather seating, and a detailed color digital display, and the Limited adds 19-inch wheels, a JBL audio system, and upgraded safety tech like blind-spot monitoring. If you want the best value, the LE Plus is the trim that adds the most everyday comfort without jumping all the way to the top end.
• Powertrain: The base 2.7-liter inline 4-cylinder makes 185 hp and is described as barely enough for the Highlander’s weight. A 3.5-liter V6 is optional on the LE and standard on higher trims, and it is paired with a 6-speed automatic. The review also notes that Eco mode can help efficiency when full power is not needed.
• Safety package: The Highlander comes standard with a backup camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and a full array of advanced front and side impact airbags. With the available pre-collision system, it is a 2014 Top Safety Pick Plus award winner. Available driver-assistance features include lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert, with some of the upgraded safety tech reserved for higher trims.
• Infotainment: The Highlander uses the Entune multimedia touchscreen interface, which includes apps such as Pandora streaming radio, Yelp, and Bing. The screen is 6.1 inches, and navigation is accessed through the app page rather than a dedicated dash button. The system also includes live-pausing radio.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.7-liter I4 with front-wheel drive returns 20 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. The V6 with front-wheel drive returns 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, while the AWD test trim was listed at 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.

Which 2014 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?

The 2014 Toyota Highlander is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, Limited.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Highlander formula with 8-passenger seating, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, a backup camera, and Bluetooth. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting point, but the base 2.7-liter engine is described as barely enough, so it is best for buyers who care more about price than power.
• LE Plus: This is the best-value trim because it adds meaningful comfort upgrades like three-zone climate control, rear climate toggles, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and SofTex leatherette seating. If you want the sweet spot between price and everyday livability, this is the trim to target.
• XLE: This trim steps up with navigation, leather seating, and a detailed color digital display in the instrument panel. It suits you if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to pay more for convenience and presentation.
• Limited: This is the top trim, adding 19-inch wheels, a JBL audio system, and upgraded safety tech like blind-spot monitoring. It is the right pick if you want the most equipment and are willing to pay for it.

The safety package is strongest when the Highlander is equipped with the available pre-collision system, which unlocks the Top Safety Pick Plus recognition.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Toyota Highlander?

This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.

• Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,269 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.31% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 57.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,944, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Toyota Highlander's resale value?

The current average of $15,457 sits slightly below last year's $15,822.

That tells you the market has eased a bit, which can work in your favor if you are buying now but may mean a softer exit price later if you plan to sell. Even so, the Highlander’s strong reputation for reliability, comfort, and value helps support demand among used buyers. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should remain easier to move than neglected ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander safe?

The 2014 Toyota Highlander earns a Top Safety Pick Plus award from IIHS when equipped with the available pre-collision system.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes a backup camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and a full array of advanced front and side impact airbags. Available driver-assistance features include lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The main caveat is that the strongest safety recognition depends on the available pre-collision system, so you should confirm that a used example has the safety equipment you want.

Should I buy a 2014 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.31% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2014 Highlander stands out for bringing more power, technology, and athletic styling to a family crossover without losing everyday usefulness.

The bottom line: The 2014 is a smart choice if you want a family crossover with strong owner satisfaction, solid safety, and a market that still offers some deal opportunities. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and shop carefully for the best-equipped, cleanest example you can find.

How does the 2014 Toyota Highlander compare to the 2014 Honda Pilot?

Our experts score the 2014 Toyota Highlander 8.7/10 and the 2014 Honda Pilot 6.8/10.

The Highlander comes across as the more polished and better-rounded choice, with stronger expert and owner feedback, better deal availability, and a higher accident-free share. The Pilot offers more horsepower, but the Highlander counters with better fuel economy in city driving, a stronger safety score, and a more appealing overall value proposition for many used buyers. If you want the more satisfying family crossover, the Highlander is the better bet; if you prioritize V6 power above all else, the Pilot is worth a look.
