CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 641 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,476, 26.7% of 2014 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Toyota 4Runner 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
57.7% of 2014 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a traditional body-on-frame SUV in a market that has largely moved toward car-based crossovers. It is described as a rugged vehicle that is as good in the mountains as it is on the freeway, and it combines comfortable daily driving with true off-road capability. That mix gives it a distinctive appeal for buyers who want an SUV that still feels genuinely truck-like without being as extreme as some off-road-focused alternatives.
Its main strength is that it does not try to be a compromise vehicle. The 4Runner is presented as a rugged SUV that persists in a segment where many familiar nameplates have shifted to crossover formulas, and that persistence is part of its appeal. At the same time, the description makes clear that its character is balanced rather than one-dimensional: it is meant to handle everyday use comfortably while still delivering the capability expected of a serious SUV.

Great vehicle overall. Very solid drivetrain. I wouldn’t compare it to much. I own a 2006 with 320k and running strong.

I love this car, i've just decided i need something a little smaller for my family. We had plenty of space on our family vacation and got great gas mileage on the highway (24MPG). Only thing i wish it had was a power lift gate.

It’s a comfortable vehicle. I like all the features it comes with. It rides smoothly. I’m so happy with the heated seats. I don’t care for the moonroof but it wasn’t a feature that made me not want to buy this model.

How much does the 2014 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $20,468 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,592.97 |
| Year-Round High | $21,411.59 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,419 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.44% |
Prices have softened 4.44% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 631 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $19,592.97, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Toyota 4Runner earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The expert review describes it as a traditional body-on-frame SUV that still delivers comfortable daily driving along with true off-road capability, which makes it a strong fit if you want ruggedness without giving up all-road usability.
The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Technology.
That combination makes sense if you want an SUV that feels truck-like, handles mountain roads and freeway driving with confidence, and stands apart from more car-based crossovers. 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The expert review also frames it as a durable, traditional SUV with rough construction that should withstand significant impact, and it emphasizes the 4Runner’s long-running, proven character rather than anything experimental. The 4.0-liter V6 and 5-speed automatic are described as a traditional setup that suits this rugged SUV well.
The cost-effectiveness commentary also points to strong resale value, which usually goes hand in hand with a vehicle that buyers trust over time. For used shoppers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about novelty and more about making sure the truck-like hardware has been maintained and not abused off-road.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota 4Runner?
At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has seen trail use or heavy towing. Focus on body condition, suspension wear, and signs of hard use, since this model’s appeal often comes from capability that can also mean tougher ownership.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 starts with 17-inch alloy wheels, a multi-information display, leather-trimmed steering wheel controls, and standard Bluetooth hands-free phone operation. The Trail adds off-road crawl control, 9.6 inches of ground clearance, and rugged visual and functional upgrades, while the Limited adds 20-inch wheels, front and rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, and more upscale equipment.
- Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 5-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is available on the SR5, 4-wheel drive is available or standard depending on trim, and the Limited uses full-time 4-wheel drive with Active Traction Control.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, antilock brakes, Brake Assist, Smart Stop Technology, front and side impact airbags, side impact door beams, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
- Infotainment: A 6.1-inch touchscreen is optional on the Trail and standard on the Trail Premium sub-trim. It adds iPod/aux connectivity, HD radio, an integrated backup camera, and Entune App Suite with BING web searches, Pandora streaming radio, and OpenTable features.
- Fuel efficiency: The SR5 RWD returns 17 mpg city/22 highway, and the 4WD versions return 17/21.
Which 2014 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2014 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 3 trim levels: SR5, Trail, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the starting point if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness with the lowest entry price. You get the basic comfort and convenience equipment, plus the option of rear-wheel drive or 4WD, so it makes sense if you want the 4Runner experience without paying for extra off-road or luxury gear.
- Trail: This is the best-value trim if you want the 4Runner’s off-road personality to come through more clearly. It adds crawl control, more ground clearance, and rugged visual and functional upgrades, and it’s the trim that best matches the model’s adventurous character.
- Limited: Choose this if you care more about road comfort and upscale features than trail hardware. It adds 20-inch wheels, parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, and a smoother, more road-friendly feel.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, so your trim choice mostly comes down to how much off-road capability or comfort equipment you want.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 631 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.44% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,592.97, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $20,468 sits slightly below last year's $21,419.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy in at a more favorable point if you plan to own the vehicle for several years. Even so, the 4Runner’s reputation for durability and its loyal following support stronger retention than many mainstream SUVs. If you buy well and keep it in good condition, the model’s market appeal should remain relatively resilient.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, antilock brakes, Brake Assist, Smart Stop Technology, front and side impact airbags, side impact door beams, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The review also notes that the upright, truck-based design gives it better visibility than many newer vehicles, which can help everyday confidence behind the wheel.
One caveat is that the 4Runner’s traditional construction and handling feel may take some adjustment if you’re used to a car-based crossover. That said, the expert review says it should feel perfectly fine once you adapt to its truck-like character.
Should I buy a 2014 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.44% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It blends rugged body-on-frame construction with comfortable daily driving and true off-road capability.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $21,945, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $20,468 average.
- It is described as built for hard-core off-road enthusiasts and excels on rock-strewn paths.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2014 is the stronger starting point because it combines lower pricing with the same rugged 4Runner formula. If your priority is a later-year alternative and you’re willing to pay more for a model that leans even harder into off-road use, the 2015 is worth a look.
