Does anyone know what would be leaking fuel on the left side of an 88 ford e150

I left the cap off of the gas tank and after replacing
it the van is leaking fuel on the opposite side of the
fuel system from something about a foot back from
the front passenger  tire.

could be the filler tube at the top of the tank is leaking. If you smell fuel from the tank / know its leaking, do not drive it. You could risk igniting your tank. Get a mobile mechanic or tow to a repair shop for work. Small price to pay vs your investment catching on fire / filing insurance claim / etc.
