There is a feedback through the charging system. Does the alt light work? If not it needs too.

Sounds like a bad ignition switch or something like an aftermarket stereo is allowing power to bypass the ignition switch. Hope that helps! Jim

Hot coil wire may get feed back through the amp meter on the dash board , . A bad diode ? , idiot lights on the have 2 hot wires , they light up until the alternator makes more juice than the batt then they go out , your experience may differ
