Where some trucks not equipped with a check engine light?

Asked by May 05, 2016 at 01:02 PM about the 1992 Nissan Pickup 2 Dr STD Standard Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My truck failed smog because the check engine light was not functional.
After taking the dash apart I realized the truck doesn't even have a check engine light to repair!
Is there any way to document this to prove to the smog/DMV people that my vehicle is exempt?

If you can find where it was sold, there was some debate going on back then about California trucks had to have the light while the other states did not. The smog guys should have known this.

The truck was originally sold in Utah. I called the Ca BAR. They suggested I go to a smog "referee" station to confirm that it does not have that light. I'll see what happens...thanks!
