How do I know if my 1996 Nissan Maxima needs a new Serpentine Belt?

The car has been squealing when started, and now battery dies before I can get it started.

I tightened the tensioner. This seems to have done the trick, However, I intend to replace the belt, if needed or not. When doing this I will check the pulleys.
