1997 Nissan Sentra 1.6L

Asked by Erik Feb 07, 2020 at 10:58 AM about the 1997 Nissan Sentra GXE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car won't go in reverse. Overhauled the automatic transmission. In the
reverse clutch one of the plates were destroyed. Appeared to wreck the
inside of the reverse drum and high clutch drum, so replaced both drums.
put all new plates in. Discovered the overdrive cancel solenoid was bad, so
replaced those. Drive works. Can't feel the car shift into reverse. Normally
should feel something, like when shifting into D. Like something isn't kicking
in? The tires stop when shifting into reverse. Feels pretty solid, like holding
the break. Just won't go. Anyone have any ideas?

You are brave to attempt a rebuild like this. I suspect you made a mistake when putting it back together. Bummer.

I certainly wouldn't do it on my own. My grandpa who was a mechanic for many years did the majority of it. To put $500 into the car to have another functioning vehicle for one of my teen kids is well worth it! I do have the complete service manual, so was trying to make sure we had every spacer, washer, o-ring, in the correct place. Although, looking at it again, I don't think we measured gaps as we were getting it back together. But everything we took out got put back with same side spacer and such. Is there a way to test the valve assembly? Also just realized we didn't test the line pressure...
