What could cause my 2001 Nissan Maxima battery and brake lights to go on and off?

Asked by acruse Aug 04, 2015 at 04:26 PM about the 2001 Nissan Maxima GXE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Nissan Maxima and last week my battery and brake light came on at the same time. They stayed on for a while and then went off. Since then it comes on  goes back off. It may stay on all day or it might stay on a couple of minutes. My brakes and fluid are fine and when we put the meter on my battery this what we get.  Battery voltage 11 ( when the battery light and Brake lights are on.) So this tells me that my alternator isn't charging but the next time I start my car the light may not be on and it is charging around 13 volts. this tells me my alternator is charging so what the heck is going on. It comes on and off when I am driving too not just idling. PLEASE some one help me this has me and my Dad rattled...lol

Take your car to Autozone and have your charging system checked, your battery may have a weak cell if it is showing 11 volts, or your internal voltage regulator inside the alternator is intermittent. If I'm not mistaken the brake and battery light are close together and could be the battery light is shining a little through the other.
