When it ran out of fuel the pump most likely pulled up some crud from the tank bottom and so it would wind up in the fuel filter and my have damaged the fuel pump, so I would first replace the fuel filter and see if that helps the problem, if not then I would recommend that the fuel pressure and flow be tested to verify a bad fuel pump. HTH
For got to add the you should never run less than 1/4 tank of fuel as this keeps the fuel pump submerged so it runs as cool as possible, cause the pump uses the fuel as a coolant, when less than 1/4 the pump starts to become exposed and then it tends to run hotter than normal.
The car is starting but heating up very fast. It is a Nissan micra petrol. Could it cost much in the UK to get the pump replaced and i's it possible to try and clean the filter
I have a full tank
You can't clean the filter, it is sealed unit, you got me there on the price in the UK, but your car should have an access late to get to the pump assembly and that cuts the cost a lot cause you don't have to drop the fuel tank. If it is heating up faster than normal it could be a stuck thermostat or (heaven forbid) a blown head gasket. :(
