Can the TPS computer be reset from 5 tire to 4 tire?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

AT 36K plus, after a new tire install, my TPS light activated by blinking for about
30 seconds and then remaining on.  The shop informed me the system was
looking for the spare, and reset the light, but several days later, the light is back
with the same blink/on indication.  This van came factory without a spare, and
the light never came on because of the spare before.  Any insights?

The TPMS system is preprogrammed for the correct amount of tires from the factory. If what they say it is looking for then the system needs a re- flash from the dealer. This may have been caused by a voltage surge or drop out, so you might want to get the battery and charging system checked over.

The change/problem occurred during my first high speed (65 mph interstate) after buying new tires which weren't balanced properly. Could the vibration have affected the computer? I don't think there is any problem with my electrical system.

Normally no, but if the vibration was severe enough it could have damaged the computer and or the sensors. I have seen a lot of Chrysler products have computer problems due to vibration.

Well, I wouldn't call it severe but it was the variable that occurred when the problem arose. When the light comes on after starting now, each time it flashes for about 30 seconds before settling to steady. This was different to the time it came on and I had a low tire. It just lit up. I had the tires rebalanced at the shop where I bought them (BTW, the tech who did my vehicle is no longer employed there) and now they run smooth. The new tech informed me of the reason the light came on and he rest it, but a few days later (5 days) it came back on the same way. Do you think a competent shop can flash the computer or reset it to 4 tires of am I doomed to take it to a dealer?

The only way an independent shop can do it is if they have a dealer quality scanner with a link to the Chrysler data base through a supplier like All Data. If you can't find one then you stuck with the dealership. Sorry

So the shop made it right. The boss scanned all 4 tires and discovered the sensor in the right front was no longer working. He offered to replace it there and then, but said he can't take responsibility for it but that he would do it for half price, quoted at $50. I said OK, but I reminded him that the right front was one of the tires changed by his inept tech. I guess he reconsidered because when the job was done he waived me off no charge. The light is out now, and hopefully for good. I'm thinking the sensor was bad from the time the light came on. Thanks for your responses. They were helpful. Rick

I've seen this happen before, an inexperienced person doing the job and damages the TPMS sensor and cause it is down under the rim they don't see it. So the Boss probably saw what happened and was good enough to own up to it. That guy is as good as it gets. Keep him in mind next time.

That's exactly what I think happened. I reminded him that it was on a tire his guy had changed, and that nothing was wrong with any of my TPMS prior to the tire install. I'm lucky enough to be able to own newer vehicles so I'm not in any shop too often, but when I do need something done, I will continue to use this guy.
