Shift position issues.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer ES with a A/T. When I shift my car into (D) it stays in (N);
but if I shift past (D) and into (3) it will engage. Similarly, if I shift to (R) it will not engage;
but if I shift to (N) and back to (R) it will engage. I have noticed that sometimes when
shifted in (N) the (R) gear is engaged. There are no transmission DTCs, and the ATF is
full and in good condition.
