battery died in 1993 Mercury Cougar. How do I get the hood open. I pulled the latch but it only pulled 1/3 inch to the left and hood didn't popped.

1993 Mercury Cougar has this electrical number lock above the driver door handle. When the battery died after sitting so long, the number lock wasn't working. I only have the ignition key so I can't get inside the car. I layed under the car front and reached up, pulled at the end of the hood release wire and the hood popped up. The hood was higher by 3 inches. I pulled at the hood latch and hood went up all the way. The hood latch to the left undid the "hook" lock. Thanks for your answer to my question.
