Should I change fluid and filter in transmission or what are your recommendations?

Asked by James Jun 28, 2017 at 01:31 PM about the 2005 Mercury Sable LS Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Transmission seems to be slipping when shifting into 2nd gear. If you barely touch the accelerator it shifts normal. Owner says that the fluid and filter has never been changed since she purchased the vehicle. Was going to start with filter and fluid since she has put on about 100,000 k miles since she purchased vehicle. Just wanted to check to make sure there were no other known similar issues with this model. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You can change the fluid and filter and hope for the best but once a transmission starts slipping it is probably past the point of no return. First check the fluid level to make sure it is not low or brown.

It's not low and not brown. It seems to shift perfect as long as you take off easy. At first I thought it might be something to do with the passing gear. When it does it, it still pulls but you get a warning to check transmission.

Change the fluid and filter and hope for the best.
