Misfire/dead cylinder

Asked by May 15, 2016 at 08:23 PM about the 2005 Mercury Sable GS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2005 Mercury Sable with a 3.0 ohv
pushrod engine with about 180,000. We got it back
from the shop for a timing cover gasket
replacement and it ran great for about 3 days.
Today it died when we came to a stop. Then took
awhile to restart. Got about 30 miles down the
road it died again. Very rough idle even worse in
drive, big loss of power. Began checking it out to
find a cracked coil. Replaced the coil but now
cylinders 3 and 4 are dead at the coil, no spark at
all. Pulled the plugs recapped and cleaned them.
Number 3 plug was wet so there is fuel getting to
it. Didn't pull 4 just yet but assuming the same
thing. What is causing a cylinders 3 and 4 to not
fire on the coil. Also returned the new coil went to
a more trusted auto store and got another coil only
to have the same problem. Help!!!

The Ford EECV vehicle computer is having a problem with the drivers that control the grounding circuit which sends a signal to the coil to fire to cyl 3 and cyl 4 have it read for codes you should get a result close to this: P0303 or P0304~~P0351 - Ignition Coil A Primary/Secondary Circuit~~ P0352 - Ignition Coil B Primary/Secondary Circuit~~ P0353 - Ignition Coil C Primary/Secondary Circuit

I wish I could post a picture of the printout of the reading I had that done today too but the codes are as follows PO300 random misfire detected PO171 bank 1 combustion too lean PO174 bank 2 combustion too lean PO303 cylinder 3 misfire PO352 ign coil 2 primary secondary circuit malfunction PO353 ign coil 3 primary secondary circuit malfunction PO300 random misfire detected PO171 PO174 PO352 Seems like they just started repeating

Is the eecv replaceable by itself or is it built in the pcm?

EEC-V is the PCM, it stands for Electronic Engine Control version 5. Some people that post on here make things sound more technical than necessary which many times causes confusion.

Okay thanks for your help really didn't want to hear that but hey at least I have a better idea what is going on.

So I'm guessing this is definitely pointing at a computer problem then
