have an '01 mpv for about 4 yrs now and changed the starter and alternator about 3-4 times now, does anyone know why?

Cheap parts? Some are just better than others.

Check the belt may be too tight or out of alignment with the pulley. Also check the ground cable from the motor to body of the car.
