Flashing check engine light, rough idle, bad fuel mileage

Asked by Jan 20, 2016 at 09:44 AM about the 2001 Mazda 626 ES V6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 626 had about 104k miles on it when I
bought it, and about 106k now. It started
showing the check engine light a couple
months ago, and a friend said it was giving
the code for the EGR valve. It very recently
started flashing the check engine light. The
idle became very rough, and my fuel mileage
has been cut almost in half.

Have the codes read at your local auto parts store and post the 4 digit codes back here. Might be the EGR again, vacuum leaks or misfire, the codes will help us determine what you need to check first.

If the EGR has stuck open that would give you a rough idle and the computer will see a lean condition on the O2 circuits so it will try to make it richer so that will kill your mileage and foul out the O2 sensors, so you may have more than just 1 problem now and it can get worse and expensive the more you drive it.
