how do i know if my 4×4 is working on my 2003 kia sorento?

Take it to a gravel or dirt area. Stomp on the gas and you should easily get wheel spin in 2wd. Then put it in 4wd and try it again. You should see a huge difference in traction.

My wife's 2004 Sorento had a dash light that would illuminate when the 4wd was engaged. However, the light doesn't necessarily mean that 4wd is actively engaged, so as Full_of_Regrets mentioned, taking it somewhere you can test will help. Also, try making a turn (low / no traffic area) w/4wd engaged and it will probably be a choppy turn if engaged. Good luck!!
