Subaru Impreza Transmission Cover

Asked by Andrew Sep 02, 2018 at 07:00 PM about the 2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I smelt a burning smell today when I got out of my car. I noticed the padding atop the transmission, the black cover/insulator/shield around the transmission was town, and I believe the fibers were burning. What is the name of this black insulator around the transmission, it is bolted in at certain places. 2017 Impreza, with the extended Gold plus warranty, any chance this is still covered?

This material would likely be fiberglass or some other fiber with a flame retardant added. Looks like the outer metallic covering was ripped, most likely by a rodent as they like to use the inner fibrous material to make a nest. On my '13 Impreza, they moved fibrous material from the hood liner to the air cleaner box, where they nested for the winter. To fix, either remove the pad or cover rips with foil duct tape, available at hardware stores. To keep rodents out, get some castor-oil based mouse repellent spray. I use it on my black plastic under hood trim; looks just like Armor All.
