Different tyres sizes on the front axle on a rwd.

I had two new 17 tyres placed both on the
passenger side of my car at Bridgestone, I also
have a spare wheel on the drivers side front axle
which is 16 inch. Should they have put the new
tyres on the front axle instead of both on the one
side of the car?. Is it bad for my car in anyway to
have two different sized wheels on the same axle?.

Yes - you should not run different size tires on the same axel for extended periods of time or miles, especially if it is an all wheel drive vehicle. The car was designed for a specific size tire for safety reasons you should continue to use the same size tires when replacing. Since this in an older car there is no warranty invalidation issues to consider when putting on larger wheels.
