I just bought a 2018 Jeep Cherokee Latitude and my vehicle is currently at the dealer. The light would appear on the dash, then PRND would all turn red (no flashing) on the shifter. I was told that they are doing a update on the car and waiting to find out if the shifter does indeed need to be replaced. If i turn the car off and take the key out the Shifter Service light on my Dash would clear out. It didn't happen often but im on pins and needles waiting for word back. I was told this is covered under my warranty. Anyone else had the issue and it was fixed after the shifter was replaced? I haven't noticed any misfires though.

I got a call back from the dealer today regarding the "Shifter Service" light that appeared on my dash and the PRND lights all turning red. They stated that they are going to "replace the floor shifter assembly". This is covered under warranty which I am VERY happy that it is. I dropped my car off on Tuesday, and the part wont be arriving until Monday. So not sure of the time frame of them actually fixing it. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should ask them regarding the repair when I pick it up? Thanks.

I got my car back from the dealer. This is what the paperwork they gave me back stated. "Customer states service shifter light was coming on, found that the shifter was shorted and would not properly read what gear the vehicle was in. Removed and replaced the shifter and rested and the vehicle now operates as designed" This was covered under my warranty.

I have a 2017 Jeep Cherokee Sport I have had to have a new engine out in because 2 cylinders were bad and now my service shifter light is coming on. I need new shifter wire and a new bezel. This is ridiculous. They need to give me a new car. We should file a law suit.

I have a Jeep Cherokee 2017. I have brought it to the dealer 5x's for bumping at low speed. I think it is a trans issue but they return paper work that states "drives as designed, can not duplicate customer complaint". I have had other people in my vehicle when it has happened. It is not phantom. Recently, I had the thermostats replaced, it was stuck open and car would not auto start and check engine light came on. Now I am having the shifter issue.

We have the 2017 latitude 3 month,5 months and 15 months we had to have the cylinders replaced. When it happened at 3 months they did not have it in stock and said it would be weeks, but it was safe to drive the car???? At 16 months the shifter service light has come on. Never a Jeep again.

has anyone considered a class action lawsuit for this service shifter failure. My dealership is telling me that its not covered under warranty becuase it's the shifter and that part is not covered. What a ripoff.

I have a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. Shifter warning light cam on and all the lights on shifter went red. The lights went off after I restarted the car. Long and short thank God for having an extended warranty or I would be on the street homeless repairing this car I bought brand new.To date Shifter has been replaced twice, Rear differential and both rear axels replaced, radiator replaced, and the day before the radiator was being replaced the check engine light came on and I was told by the new employee by accident that the extended warranty was not going to cover the quart of oil I was down but was covering the oil sensor that went. "I said back up."" I was down a quart of oil?" I have an extended warranty to 100,000 miles I was at 91,000.(I have an 1hr 1/2 commute to and from work) "I went round and round with her that losing oil was not normal and if you are telling me its normal I want that in writing from you." When picking the car up the Service Manager checked me out and said that due to the warranty being up soon I should do an oil consumption study. which I did and guess what folks the engine was failing. I am now in the process of having a used engine with 7,000 miles put in that is being covered bu extended warranty. My advice to any Jeep Cherokee owner is do not let them blow smoke up your rear. Fight to have them follow up and if you do not have something covered contact Jeep and fight to have repair reviewed. Worst car ever. I am never buying Jeep Dodge product after this and going Japanese when I finish paying for this lemon.Thoughts and prayers.

If you bought the four cylinder engine version, engine life of 100K miles is normal. Auto makers needed to obtain fleet averages to meet government regulation. All mechanics likely know that 4 bangers on heavy vehicles will have limited lives. Looking for a car for my teen, I found many on 2nd or 3rd engine in all makes and models. Choose wisely. The 3.2L 6 in my Cherokee gets better gas mileage than some 4’s and is a blast to drive!

I filed a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about this issue. I’m having the same problem with my 2016 Jeep Cherokee. If they get enough people with this issue they will open an investigation for a recall. After I submitted my complaint they said they will post it on their website to see if other drivers are having the same issue. Go on the their website NHTSA.gov and let them know you are having this issue as well so we can get a recall Here’s the link if you want to submit your own report for this issue https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

I’m dealing with my second case of this happening. Dulles Jeep has my 2017 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4x4. Last time was in January of 2018, $1600 or so to replace! Such a scam that this isn’t a recall. So many people have had this issue!

I've got a 2018 Cherokee with 57k on the 3.2 v6. Had it since new. Change oil religiously with mobile 1 every 5k. Service shifter light came on today. Ive taken it to the dealer for other problems like "jumping" forward while driving on freeway, front axels clicking while turning and hard shifts, pulls to the right, occasionally dash lights turn off and car refuses to start. Dodge dealer in Hebron Ohio has alllll kinds of bullcrap excuses talking about computer, blah blah blah. Crest of the road makes it pull blah blah. Thinking I don't know anything about cars. I'm interested to see what they say now that my warranty is up and I've got to service the shifter of all parts! A part that I have NEVER heard of failing in any car. It's rediculous

File a complaint with the NTSB (Google NTSB Complaint - you'll need your VIN). Nothing your dealership replaces will fix this according to the postings. My 2018 is losing oil and this light is coming on every week. What a lemon - never again.

My parents leased a Jeep Cherokee Latitude Plus 4X4 in December of 2017. The vehicle treated us great in 2018, but something happened in April of this year. My father told me when he was getting out of work to start the car, he saw a "Service Shifter" message in the gauge cluster. The shifter lights were also all lit up. When he went to shift the car, everything worked fine. After he turned off the vehicle, he turned it back on, and the message was not present anymore. The second time it happened was with my mother. When she started the vehicle, the "Service Shifter" message appeared again. She then turned off the car, and after she turned it back on, it was gone. The third time it happened was when my father was bringing me to practice. When we both got in the vehicle for my father to start it, this was the first time I saw the "Service Shifter" notification. The shift gear lights came on, and he turned it off. After he turned it on, everything was alright. I also know my parents said that they saw it again while they were out. After the very first time the "Service Shifter" notification came on, my father called the dealership. When he went to get it, he received a loaner car for a few hours. After he returned it, I saw him asking the people at the front desk if the vehicle was safe to drive, and they were saying that the mechanic would not let him drive the vehicle, if it was not safe. He was very firm, because he did not want anything to go wrong while driving. At the same time, the part was ordered, but here is when it gets strange. The dealership did not explicitly state the problem, but said that they have to replace a column shifter/the whole entire shifter. There was also something that was grotesque. The grotesque part was that the part took more than five weeks to come in. My father called the dealership to corroborate the exact time of the shifter arriving to the dealership. The people said that they had no clue when it was coming in. Finally, my dad receives a letter in the mail today, and it was a confirmation that the new shifter came in. He is going to get the new shifter installed this Friday, and hopefully this solves the problem. I know the car is currently around 15,000 miles. I have a theory that this is a glitch (or maybe even serious), because if the problem was occurring more often, the car will always state that something will have to be serviced. Since that never happened, this statement perfectly fits the theory. I believe it is important to spread awareness on this issue, because people will boycott certain companies, due to their problems. When the certain companies struggle, they will have to drastically change the way they engineer and inspect their vehicles.

I am having the same problems right myself with the misfire, check engine light, Start/Stop warning light and just today for the first time my shifter service appeared on the dash, when I'm stopped at a red light the engine is literally rocking every few seconds, sometimes I feel the car not accelerating properly that it holds back and bolts, it drags the shift to a high rpm like 3 or 4 on 1 to 4 gear sometimes 5, the front right suspension sounds like its grinding against metal when going over speed bumps or little bumps in the road, and when I accelerate I have this annoying squealing/screeching/whistling noise coming from the engine and every time I push on the gas and it also happens through almost every gear except 6 to 8 and that's sometimes as well. Its a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2L V6. Im financing it used, got pretty much rapped on interest as a first time buyer with an extremely high amount as a monthly payment haven't had the car for 5 months and am having all these issues. I replaced the battery for a brand new 1, I have done oil changes to the best possible oil, try putting the best possible gas, haven't modified it or anything and these issues are happening and its ridiculous. Jeep customers are paying tons of money for these vehicles to be having issues. I don't understand why they haven't found a way to fix the issue that I am sure has been happening for years to different models on there line. I was told not to get one because Jeep was known to have problems but trusted my gut and it failed me. SMH. Has anyone else had issues like these all happening Simultaneously

I have a 2015 Cherokee Latitude with the service shifter light acting up too. The thermostat housing was replaced at 32,000 miles and around 80,000 I started getting the service shifter light occasionally. Chrysler says the shifter is not covered under the powertrain warranty so I just kept shutting the car off and resetting it. Now at 91,000 miles my light is staying on. I will be pulling it apart and checking for loose wires myself. I bought a 99 Grand Cherokee new which now has 160,000 miles and I still trust it more than this Fiat junker.

Did somebody spill anything on the shifter console like water, juice, beer, wine, juice coolers, anything? If so you probably shorted the harness it could be intermittent go and come back on other days even water some areas have a lot of iron in their water.

We own 2 - 2017 Jeep Cherokees and the service shifter light on the dash and all the lights on the shifter come on after there is an update done. When you shut the vehicle off and turn it back on the issue is gone. Also own a 2018 Cherokee and knock on wood this has not happened at all in this vehicle.

I just experienced this on Friday, July 19, 2019. I have a 2018 Jeep Cherokee Latitude and I was driving up the interstate when I heard a ding and looked down and it displayed service shifter. All my lights were red on the shifter and I could not clear it. When I parked and turned the ignition off and turned it back on it was cleared. I have an appointment with the dealership on Wednesday. I will go ahead and file a complaint with NHTSA in hopes it will help.

I just had the service shifter lights come on on my 2017 Jeep Cherokee 44,000 miles. I took it back to the dealer and it is covered under warranty. They told me it is not safe to drive and kept it because if all of the lights come on - from D to P- it could confuse the transmission and you could be cruising at 65band all of a sudden the transmission could jump in to N or even P. Definitely not safe. They are replacing the part but had to order it so I have a rental car for now. I never heard of this but it is something Jeep owners need to be aware of - especially from 2016 to present.......

About two weeks ago the gage cluster displayed service shifter along with all the lights on the shifter lighting up and about two weeks before that it happened. Finally was able to get the car diagnosed today at the dealer ship and the have come back to me and said it has to do with the brake sensor starting to go bad. Since this is after 36k miles it’s not covered under Basic Warranty. The dealership mentioned to me the brake sensor issue is because of driving with 2 feet (ie: one foot brake and one foot gas and then having both pressed at the same time) Overall over the past 6 months it’s been the same thing people have mentioned with the message displaying and PRND lights turning on and staying on and then everything clears once the car is off.

Having this issue with 2 different 2017 Cherokees. Brought one in ad they replaced the wiring harness. Told us that this is a common problem. luckily this one is still under warranty. Unfortunately the other one is not and I am afraid to know how much it will cost us for that one.

My 2016 Jeep Cherokee had the "Service Shifter" show up yesterday at 67000 miles. Shut car off and it went away. Sounds like a wide spread problem that in some cases is the tip of the iceberg for a vast array of other problems.

I have a 2014 Jeep Cherokee with 50,000 miles on it. All the shifter lights stay on no matter what gear I am in. This happened before and then it stopped doing it. Then it was sporadic. Now they have been on for at least two weeks.

10

My grandmas jeep is doing the same thing. She pulls over turns the car off and then turns it back on, it goes away for like 15 minutes and then turns back on. It's probably a short in the shifter.

Well, we are doubly stupid at my house. Have TWO Jeep Cherokees, both 2017. One is 4wd, other is AWD, both 6 cylinder, both are Limiteds. First, my husband's Cherokee service shifter light came on, and two weeks later same thing for mine! His just ran out of warranty, so dealer is saying $500 or so to fix. Very strange. He bought his is July 2017, I bought mine October 2017. I called Jeep about this and they don't think this is a widespread problem. I think that's BS.

I had this problem fixed at my dealer for about $300. We have a four cylinder engine. They showed me a Service Bulletin concerning this problem that they had received - so it is a KNOWN issue.

I have had the sensors in my vehicle twice and I need them changed again. It’s really frustrating having to PAY for my vehicle every month and not be able to drive it because of the sensor issues getting fixed every two months.

Same exact thing. 2017 Cherokee. Dash indicates service shifter. All gear lights come up as red as a monkey ass. I filed complaint with the highway whatever. Hopefully hear back.

Same thing here!! 2016 Jeep Cherokee 40,000 miles. Solid red lights, service shifter indicator. Comes on every couple of days. Plan to file a complaint with https://www- odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/ like the others. This many people having this issue should prompt a recall. Insane!

I have a 2015 jeep cherokee latitude and 4 time is has just turned off without warning, says that it needs to shift in gear, but found out that the engine is burning too much fuel. It only has 40,000 miles on it. Today, the service shifter light came on. I turned the car off and on and it disappeared, but I am out of warranty because it is a 2015. They said there is nothing they can do for me. There is no reason a car with this little of milage should be this unsafe or have this many problems. Anyone have any solutions to these problems?

At 57000+ miles my service shifter came on 2017 Cherokee. Being New year's day service is closed. My PRNDM lights are off. Driving the warning goes on and off. I will call tomorrow morning to see if I need the shifter replaced. I'm driving it but not sure if I should be driving it or not. It's a v6 4x4 sport. Any suggestions?

I have a 2016 Jeep Cherokee North and the service shifter message has come on. Anyone have any luck with finding out if this will be a recall issue? Warranty is long gone and I do not want to spend a fortune fixing an issue the manufacturer should be fixing themselves!

10

Attention ALL SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT RESEARCHERS: Check the connection under the shifter bezel, as follows: 1) remove shift knob, by pulling down on the leather boot, it should pop off, it just clips in. It will expose 2 torqex bits, remove and the shift knob comes off. 2). There is 4 clips that hold the bezel down, and 1 connection point underneath. Gently pry up on the bezel, and carefully disconnect the connector by pressing in on the locking clip. I just found that all the solder points on my friends 2014 Jeep Cherokee were either ripped out during a recall/service visit, (he was told that it was a software issue, and a fix was coming....(rrriiigghttt) or the solder points were not melted enough, causing the intermittent problems..(the dealers fix was to leave this plug disconnected). After resoldering and reassembly, the shifter worked as normal, except when selecting reverse. I noted that the “R” led light never lit up. I guess the system senses no return signal thru that led, and triggers the “Service Shifter” message, essentially telling the dealer that a led light is not illuminating, and the circuit board needs to be replaced. Buying a used bezel is an option, as long as nobody yanked on the connections enough to pull the contacts off of the solder board. A new bezel setup is around $100.00, unless someone can find the part number to just the circuit board with the led lights.

The service shifter warning came on, once only so far. When I restarted the car, it went away. I have a bumper to bumper warranty so I booked it in. Guess what; the wiring harness and bezel required are NOT covered under warranty as many of you have found out. $400 so I said no. Having chatted to the Jeep dealership, I believe this item is excluded because it happens to so many cars and really should be a recall but it isn't a recall because it doesn't affect safety or driveability. I am very disappointed with Jeep and I would be happy to be part of a class action lawsuit over this.

My service shifter light has been coming on for three years since we purchased this 2017 jeep latitude. It has been back to the dealer at least four times for this issues and jeep has to know it’s affecting thousands of vehicles. I’ve tried clearing codes with my OBDll but it only clears the codes temporarily. This is truly an dangerous issue!
