Transmission smoking on 89 C1500 Cheyenne

Asked by Jerry_G Oct 24, 2016 at 11:48 PM about the 1989 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Cheyenne LB RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 89 Cheyenne (C1500) tranny is smoking and doesn't go into any gear. I want to know what kind of tranny I have and what option is better. To either rebuild with a kit or replace the whole unit. I believe I have a 4L60E but I could be wrong. Please Help Thanx

You have a 700r4, sometimes called a 4l60. The "e" not being there is important.
