Is a Dealer entitles to increase a selling price once you make him an offer?

Question type: Car Selling & Trading In

I received an email from a Dealer and CarGurus almost 2 days ago and I am
somehow being blocked from posting a review.
The Dealer is Cars R Toys and they have a BMW X3, Stock #1356 on for 53
days at the time at $4,950. When I called and spoke with Mr. Pierre Labelle I
told him I was very interested and would be comiong in tomorrow (the 54th
day). I asked if the car in question was negotiable at all? He said he will send
me a quote. He then wrote me back with a price increase and all sorts of other
charges bring the sale to $7,214.88
I then looked at CarGurus and found the vehicle and had an increase to $5450
(all documented).
This is some sort of game this Dealer is playing to get you interested and then
throws you off your game by adding ridiculous costs to the vehicle, not to
mention raising the price now that he has an interested buyer with cash in
This is poor business ethics and I do not feel that CarGurus would accept
these type of sales had they known or now are made aware.
The vehicle :
Q#listing=185425603 should have been sold at the price quoted on CarGurus
plus taxes. I am former Law Enforsement from NYC and have seen the 'Bait &
Switch' game for years but this is completely unacceptable.
What is CarGurus willing to do to keep their good reputation?
Do you accept this type of activity on your site?

I remain,

Dr. Neil N Floyd

There are laws in place in the Privince of Quebec and I would think that CarGurus would have ploicies that were at the very least consistant with the Consumer Protection Laws. If not then what is to stop scammers on the site like eBay and the other non regulated 3rd party sites? CarGurus should take some responsibility to at least make sure the ads follow simple guidelines which fall unser the law. Otherwise CarGurus is promoting this type of behavior and will probably have to answer for their indiscretion at some some point.

Move on to another vehicle anytime games are played by the seller. Also are you sure you want a high maintenance expensive to repair used BMW?

I read your second post and perhaps you should move on to another car site.

I hear you Bob. Thx.

I would walk away if they increased the actual price. The out the door price includes things like taxes and registration which are not included in the advertised price normally. If they added in BS like undercoating, paint protection, warranties and other things I would not buy it either.

Yes F_O_R. Theyadded a 1 year warranty for $799, a file fee of $499 and taxes on those also. Just a short note, myCARFAX app has this car at close to 323,000 kms where the dealer is showing 200K. Consumer Protection says they will contact the former owner as to what mileage he sold the car with.
