Overheating Pontiac Montana

Asked by GuruTMYTN Jul 21, 2018 at 12:03 PM about the 2002 Pontiac Montana Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

After driving for 4hrs with the a/c on I cut it off and
the van started to overheat. Never had any issues
with the van and no steam was coming out. Was
the a/c fan keeping it from overheating?

If you have a 2 fan system, one fan will be on constantly when the AC is energized and both will be on when the engine temp gets to a preset at about 230 degrees. In your case, it appears that the AC fan was enough to keep the car below the high temp setting. By turning it off, you are allowing the temp to rise to the preset before it would come back on.

Thanks, I found out that my fans would not come on at all when the air is off. Gotta be the temp switch. For now I just gotta make sure my air is running to force both fans to work.
