2014 Forester AT Oil light concern

Asked by Guru956R35 Jan 17, 2021 at 08:56 AM about the 2014 Subaru Forester 2.0XT Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The AT Oil light comes on temporarily and then goes out. This happens
when the road is wet in every case I believe. The first few times I stopped
and the light would go out but there appears to be no adverse impact to the
car. My mechanic discussed this with a nearby transmission firm who
indicated the solenoid valve should be replaced for $1500 like many of the
other readers, but I don't know if the wet road coincidence was brought up
during that talk. Since that may be a root cause, I suspect bad sensor or
harness.. Any similarities with others and what was solution?

Oy.... Does it ever stall coming to a stop, or when idling? Maybe try to get a wrench with a better scan tool to chase the AT event history. Given your correlating the issue with humidity I'd first clean and tighten all harness connectors before chasing a valve body ($700 for part and 2 hours to install...not $1500.) 2010-2014 CVTs have higher failure rates, so you especially don't want to get in there for $1k to chase a non-problematic solenoid and then have the CVT drive blow up anyway soonafter. Chase the cleap and easy stuff first. If you DO need a whole CVT someday it'll cost about %1.5k for a decent used one, and another $500-600 to drop it in and reprogram. They're specific to each tear, so only a 2014 will operate correctly. Good luck.
