Temperature Gauge Readings

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My temperature gauge recently began displaying the temperature above the
gauge.  It begins after driving for about 10 minutes and starts at 226
degrees.  It has gone as high as 238 degrees.  I have about 145K miles on
the truck and have just replaced the temperature sensor and water pump.
Should the temperature be displayed, or is it a warning that it is getting too
hot?  What temperature should the truck run at.  I have never seen thsi
displayed before.

Too hot. Have the cooling system checked out.

Yes, it's running too hot. Normal operating temperature is between 195°F and about 210°F. Hope that helps! Jim

You may want to check the thermostat also, with that many miles. Oftentimes individuals change out thermostats with an incorrect temperature specification. Make sure you get one rated in accordance with the vehicle.

Double check that the thermostat was installed in the right direction.
