my temperature gauge moves all the way to the red and the indicator light comes on but the car doesnt seem to run hot. there is no steam.  what could that be?

Possibly the temperature sensor is faulty, tha guage is bad, or you really are close to overheating. Check your coolant level first, it might be low.

First check the coolent level. Then replace the thermostat and only then consider what Tom wrote above. Cheers
