when i play music through the multi media or aux output with my phone the volume is very quite.. how can i fix this

I found the same situation presenting me although I didn't attribute it to device volume right away. Apparently they expect us to know this intuitively; I just turn my phone up all the way and use stereo controls to adjust manually. Including the bass, mid, and treble - something my phone can't do and it is very intuitive to so so using the stereo itself.
