Why would my 2001 Ford Escape smell like gas
when the heat is on????

Is it raw fuel smell or exhaust? Fix the leak.

wash your engine then observe any leaks

Burning oil on the exhaust, possiblely form leaking valve cover

It may still be cheaper to wash the engine first then if need be change the gasket(s) it could be from the fuel injectors or any number of links or gaskets.
