Not shifting

Asked by Evelyne Jun 29, 2018 at 10:41 AM about the 2001 Ford Escape XLT FWD

Question type: General

My car is stuck in park and I can't  move the shifter.
Transmission fluid at correct level. Otherwise great
car with no problems (80.000 miles).
How can this be fixed?

Most cars/SUVs that have the shifter in the center console have a switch the releases when you press the brakes and it must have broken or isn't registering... if you can get some of the molding from around the shifter there should be a hole about the size of a pen, you can use a pen or whatever fits to release the shifter... It's normally towards the back of the shifter... Not sure how much it will cost to fix but at least you'll be able to drive it til then

Unfortunately the shifter is not in the center console but mounted on the steering column.

It has a interlock that is activated by the brake light switch. Check to see if it has brake lights, if not you will need to check the switch on the brake pedal assembly.
