back hatch wont open

the back hatch wont open but the tail gate will open from the inside but wont come down because of the hatch tried spraying it

i too have a 1998 jimmy. had the same problem, .u have to remove the hatch trim panel, and shot some thin oil on the release latch. if that does work, take a rubber mallet and tap the latch to work the lube into the latch. that worked for me..
