Which Turbo?

Question type: Car Customization

I am going to be upgrading sometime soon, and I want to know if anyone has had good turbo results. The one that I have been closely looking at is the FP green. My power goal is around 400whp. The car I drive is a 2007 wrx and I already have the supporting mods to go with an upgraded turbo, i.e. 850cc injectors, walbro, bigger top mount, tbe, accessport. Just want to know some opinions

Me and my friends are a big fan of Garrett turbos what size were you going with?

I have an IHI VF39 right now, which is the stock turbo off of an 04-06 sti. The one I want to get uses a TD06 hotside and I will probably go with the oversized 3 inch compressor inlet, that would be the FP Green or a GT3071R which uses a 60mm 84tim turbine wheel and 71mm 56 trim compressor wheel. The GT30R makes more top end but has more lag than the Green, and since it will be street driven lag is a fairly big selling point for me

so really your after a medium size turbo then? those big turbos are only got for top end speed

In a nutshell yes. I want around 400 whp without a huge amount of lag. And I was just wondering if anyone had any opinions or if they had run anything in the neighborhood

yea id probably go with the FP green you dont want to big like a T67 haha did you check out cobbperformance.com or amsperformance.com?

well cobbperformance.com is not a website first of all, and cobb doesnt sell turbos? I think what you were getting at was an accessport, in which case I already have one. and the gt30r is not a huge turbo, not at all like a t67. And fwiw I really dont want to go rotated mount until it is absolutely necessary, unless you are running a big turbo, it is a lot of extra pipe that kills spool time.

I am looking into upgraded turbo swaps as well. I came across a 3076r turbo with a FMI, and supporting mods would bring me around 400whp, of course with the proper tuning you will be more than satisfied with that. Check out P n L 's website. They have a 3076r custom turbo kit ready to ship.

Well unfortunately your not gonna get 400 WHP without a lot of lag. But I guess it's all opinion. If your going from a vf-39 I bet you would be more than satisfied with a 20g turbo, you'll roughly see full spool at about 3800 rpm and get into the 300-350 whp range, so you can squeeze out quite a bit of power and still have a semi quick spooling turbo. But if you really want that 400 whp go for the FP GREEN, and also at 400 whp, tranny and basic engine internals need to be upgraded as well to retain any sort of reliability.

Well I do already have an upgraded fuel system, and the car is currently running a JDM ratio six speed so the tranny is not an issue. You think rods and pistons would be the next step? go with a semi built engine and the fp green. also I will probably have the car tuned for e85
