Why have I no heat inside the car?

Asked by nanaknows Jan 10, 2021 at 08:17 PM about the 2003 Ford Taurus SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I noticed it would smell something like burning rubber in my car when the heat
would begin to come in.  Does NOT do this with a/c in summer.  I have new
cabin filter so it is not coming from engine.  What is causing the smell and now
no heat at all

A cabin filter won't take out odors and smoke completely. Check the engine for oil and coolant leaks.

Burning rubber smell is most probably a small oil leak from a gasket, is the engine moist? No heat, I'd check the coolant level first, is it full in the coolant reservoir? Maybe a stuck open thermostat if it is full?

I will certainly check my antifreeze reservoir! Silly me never thought of that! I know some things about Tauruses as I had a 2001 when it was only one year old. I had a ford escort before this car and was continuously checking the reservoir. I have never ever had a car or truck that had this eye-burning stinkinng smell in the dar when the heat finally came on! Another strange thing...I had my car running on idle for 45 minutes! It still wasn't warm at all. And no smell. That told me whatever it was, it went caput. Someone here told me it was probably the heater coil and then I read on here something aout a heate core. $$$ Gosh I alrady put 1,200 in it last year! Bad choice of a used car for sure!!
