2014 CX-5 won't shut off
Having the same issue. Turn the car off--but it does not turn off. (not putting
your foot on the brake and turning it off does not work)
Please report this to Mazda so they will address the issue. Mazda told me
that they did not have any issues reported to them. (apparently other than
I have the same problem with my 2013 Mazda CX-5. If I disconnect the battery, the electronics will shut off, but if I try to restart the car, none of the electronics will turn off. I replaced the batteries in both the key fob's twice now, and I still get the same results, I also replaced the car battery before all of this thinking that was the problem.
The problem is with the gear shifter . There must be a sensor that tells it when its in park. If you move the shifter from left to right real fast a couple of times, it will shut off when you push the button.
My 2014 CX-5 is doing the same thing. First it was once in a while now it's constantly. I've had my battery run down so many times I bought a Mighty Max jumper for fear of being stranded. I live 50 miles from the nearest town. I have tried moving the shifter like Antonio mentioned above but sometimes nothing works. I just have to hope it will start next time I get in.
I have the exact same problem in our 2014 CX-5 Touring, is Mazda listening? This is a safety issue and should have recall status; thoughts anyone? Otherwise we love the vehicle but this problem needs resolution by Mazda
I have the same issue with my 2014 Mazda touring CX 5. What a pain!! I crank again, press the press the brake put it in drive shift back to park and if I'm lucky it shuts off. Today I've had to restart 9 times when it should have taken me 2. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL!!!!!
We are having the same issue with our 2014 CX 5. Took the family into NYC the other night and parked at an outdoor valet lot. When we returned to the lot after dinner, the battery was dead. We were one of the last cars in the lot, but thankfully I had jumper cables and the parking attendant was able to use another person's car to jump start us. My co-worker has the same exact car/model year, he is having the same issue. When he took it to Compass Mazda in Middletown, NY, they refused to cover the repairs (even though he had the extended warranty). This car is primarily driven by my 17 year old daughter, and I am really worried she is going to be stranded with a dead battery as a result of this manufacturing flaw. No doubt there should be a recall on this issue.
I thought I was the only one I have a 2014 Mazda Cx5 touring and it is a consistent problem I go to press button to turn off and car stays ON...drives me crazy
Wrote to Mazda again and linked to this site. Hopefully, they will consider addressing this issue. Two weeks ago, it took 31 tries to shut off my car!
GuruZ14KS Holy Crap. Last week it was at least 7 tries. I had to put seatbelt back on move car from park to drive and back again before finally car shut off. People look at me and think I don't know how to turn my car off..
My wife has the knack for turning it off (better than me) she jiggles the gear shifter and releases it so it kind of slams into position this seems to work. Is there a Mazda forum where we can all write in or some consumer advocate group? Had to leave ir on a couple of times mot only does it deplete your battery but you can’t lock or alarm your car
I’m having same problems. 2014 Mazda CX-5. I have to turn the engine back on, put in reverse, put it back in park and try again. I turn off Bluetooth, all audio, and make sure all the doors are closed. Sometimes it takes up to 8 or 9 tries before the “accessories” in the car shut down.
It apparently is a sensor on the transmission. Took it to the dealer and had it replaced, $249. Seems to have fixed the issue.
Also have this issue with 2013 cx5 touring. Drove me crazy also... until now put in park and hit 3 bumps to the left. Works every time! NOT 2 bumps,... 3 is magic number. Good luck! Also reporting to Mazda Corp. Can everyone else do the same? Majority gets results!
Thanks for all the comments including the suggestion to move the gearshift back-and-forth a few times to make the car turn off completely. This was never an issue on my 2013 CX5 until I had my battery replaced by AAA 4 days ago. So what was affected by the swap of my battery? Will report to Mazda since I'm not alone with this issue.
I also have 2014 CX-5 and have been having this issue for a while now too. Definitely sounds like a recall is in order.
I hAve a 2013 CX5 Grand Touring, have the same issue. After pressing start button on accessory press brake pedal and moving shift lever to drive then to park, then it will completely shut off.
To Teacher 104, did they say what sensor it was?
Have the same issue in 2017 CX-5. The car won't shut off when pressing the button. Only way to shut it off is to switch gears and then get out of the car quickly. When I'm leaving the car in that state it starts beeping and keep running. Photo attached, showing the icon that appears.
I have the same problem with my 2012 cx5. luckily I found this forum. right now i am trying all te tips people provided. Now there is another problem, the car is shut off by itself after few seconds but i cant lock the car now.
I have the same problem. My 2013 Mazda CX 5 doesn't want to turn off about a quarter of the times I drive it. Issue just started a couple of weeks ago.
I've had this issue on my Cx-5 for about 2 years now. All you gotta do is push the Shifting gear slightly to the left while it's on park and press the Start button at the same time. When I take it to the dealership for maintenance they act like my Cx-5 is the only one with the issue.
Hi, I have the same problem with my 2014 CX5 Sport and now I realized it's a big issue that Mazda should do a recall on it. Please see the pic, this is where you can manage the problem. If you try by shifting left to right it won't turn off, put it on neutral and press the plastic cover under to makebit slide easily and it will turn off. hope it helps
Dealership said that my car did not recognize PARK. Cost $250 but mine is fixed.
None of those other "tricks" worked for me.
I finally took my car to the dealer this weekend to get the faulty switch replaced. I was on an extended warranty so it cost me the $100 deductible. The service department knew exactly what I was talking about. Sounds like they are seeing this issue a lot.
My 2017 CX5 is doing this also. I've only had it for 1.5 weeks and it has happened 3 times. Going to take it to the dealer and complain.
We have the same problem with our 2014 CX-5. Now, the start/stop button flashes an amber color while the car is on. Both fobs have good batteries. It’s one thing after another!
Regarding the issue of the car won't shut off completely , I spoke to corporate Mazda yesterday they told me they never heard of that problem, I am pretty much sure they lied because they don't want to do a recall on it. Everyone who has the same problem I advise you to call them at 1800-222- 5500 to report that matter. I think once they realize customers are calling about it they will do a recall. You will need the last 8 numbers of you VIN for verification of your car. Together let's make this recall happen because I am at Royal Palm Mazda dealership in 9305 Souther blvd Florida right now for that issue. $130 for diagnose and I will post how much that repair will cost me later. Please call CORPORATE AND COMPLAINT. thank you for reading my post
The car I am referring in my post is a 2014 Mazda CX5.
I went to the dealership they said it's the Shifter position switch that needed to be replaced. The cost is $ 410 + Tax total diagnose for $130 include. I did not have that kind of money, i will bring it back Tuesday to get it fix. Definitely Mazda should a a recall for that issue.
Bernadel, Thank you for the ph#, I will definitely call them as I hope others would. Wow. $400 that seems like a crazy amount. There is an post on here that stated just over $200. It should be a safety recall for this.
Bernadel- you’re being way overcharged! I got that amount, even $600 from a couple of places and then read online that people got it fixed for $250. Finally found a mazda dealership that gave a me a real price and I got it fixed for $220 after tax. Took them an hour. They also said mazda won’t do a recall because it’s not “dangerous”. Is it incredibly inconvenient?? 100%. But it’s not dangerous enough to become a recall. Very much sucks. Find an honest mazda dealer!
I will check to see if I can find a better deal somewhere else. Thank you
Bernadel, I called Mazda, filled a complaint, also did with transpertation dept. Mazda said they are looking to to see if it's covered on my extended warranty. I'm not holying my breath.
Great. Everybody should call them to file a complaint and see if they will do something . Hope it is covered under your warranty because that amount you can use it for something else.
I agree the more people call, the sooner Mazda will do something. They also give you a ref# for calling in about the issue.
I am having this same issue with my 2017 CX 3. Everything that everyone describes above is what has been happening to me. I live in Australia and I am heading down to the dealership today to speak to them about this problem. Hopefully, They will get it sorted. I have printed off all these comments to show them. :-)
Call Mazda at 1800-222- 5500 to report the problem. Mine is fixed now for $ 298 after I spent $130 for diagnosis. It was the shifter position switch who went bad. Good luck
@Bernadel. Thank you for your quick response. I don't intend in paying anything for this to be fixed as I only bought it as a demo model less than 2 months ago. I would expect that it would be covered under warranty. :-) But you never know.
This is a common problem, the mazda part number to fix this is kdy0-46-040 it should cost around $200 for parts and labor.
Thank you Evan
Thank you Evan. I spoke with the dealership and they explained a couple of things to me which I don't agree with but they said that if it happens again, to ring them straight away and they will come and look at it. I have noticed though that if you have ANYTHING touching the automatic gear shift when it is in park, it won't shut off even if it says on the dash that it is in Park. Just something to remember as we have been aware of now.
This is where you all need to go to fill out a complaint with the NAtional Highway Safety Institute so that enough complaints are logged for a recall to be implemented (it takes 5min - all you need is your vin # from your registration): https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/
I did that many weeks ago.
Mazda issued a service bulletin for this in 2015 (for 2013 models) and updated in 2016 to include 2014 models: http://ep.yimg.com/ty/cdn/yhst-24809172479195/kdy0-46-040.pdf. It should cost around $200 to fix ($60 part + and less than 1/2 hour labor)
Just got off the phone with Mazda (800-222-5500) They are aware of the problem and said if enough people complain, they will look at doing something about it. So......FLOOD THEM WITH PHONE CALLS AND EMAILS (mazdausa.com) Make them take notice of us!
#11091471- Just filed a complaint, it took just 5 minutes. Thanks for the information. When I asked my dealership here in Indianapolis they wanted $118 just to look into it. They did indicate that it was a very common problem! I’ll also call the Mazda number listed above!
I also have a Mazda CX-5 2014 - same problem. I have to turn my car on and off numerous times to get the navigation/radio screen to turn off. Mazda needs to address this because it is clearly a defect that should be recalled. I can't lock my doors until the car turns off ... really annoying!! Don't think I will be repurchasing Mazda.
I'm very upset ,I come late from work and my car doesn't turn off . I turn on again drove around the block 3 times and finally turn off. Happened some time before but now more often. Very stressful . Mazda needs to find out this issue
Having the same issue with a 2014 CX-5. Took it to the local Mazda today and the service manager denied ever hearing about the problem. I'm in Canada and when I showed him the litany of complaints on the web he said: "oh that's just in America". Will try to register a complaint with Mazda,
It's a defective shifter switch part KDYO-46-040 cost $55.80 plus tax. If you put part # in and go to Mazda site it shows the part and actually says its defective and the problem it's causing. My husband was able to replace it. On line it shows how to replace it. Also put in a complaint with Mazda corporate.
Had the same problem, extremely frustrating and can't afford $250 right now. One of the suggestions by Danny earlier worked for me. No need to cycle gears multiple times, the solution that worked for me is while it's in park, push the stick to the left. Hope it works for some other people.
PROBLEM SOLVED. CALL Corporate and make a formal complaint. Ask them to call the Dealership to make an appt for you. Get the case number and go for your appt. From there call corporate again to remind them about your issue and ask them who will pay for the service. Ive started with a U$425 bill and end up with only U$70 . I paid the part only they paid for the service. Tell them that you saw on Goggle a lot of people complaining about the same issue. In case they say they won't pay anything, tell them that will be a class action against them. That worked for me. Good Luck

You are just frustrated with the issue.
I've got a 2014 Mazda 6, I've noticed it starts happening when the weather warms up. I've also found that if you jiggle the shifter in park A LOT before shutting off the engine I have a better chance of it turning off. I don't feel like paying over $200 to fix this thing, so I found the part online for $50 and going to try and fix myself. I'll post the video when I can (I haven't found another video yet, please post if you've seen one.)
thanks everyone for posting here - I wish I would have don't a google search on this topic a long time ago. Have been dealing with this issue for a year now... Two Mazda dealerships told me it was bad batteries in my fob. Called Mazda Corporate to file a complaint. Took it to a local Mazda Dealership Friday with a stack of these notes. they replaced the switch (KDYO-46-040) at no cost. Glad its fixed but not sure it the year of frustration was worth it. Will think twice before buying another Mazda.
I have contacted Mazda several times, even though I have an extended warranty, I was told its not covered. I just ordered the part from ebay, It took me 15 mins to replace the switch. Ops check good
SAME PROBLEM with my Mazda6 2014. It was happening randomly the last couple of years and I assumed I must have double clicked the off button. But starting this year I had several instances of it taking 10 tries to turn off. Monday was the worst - I could NOT turn off the car. I had to take a wrench to disconnect the battery. Now it is going to cost me $500 to fix. I wish I had reported it last year so it was covered under warranty. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL!
Same thing has been happening to me!! It's getting worse! I just called Mazda and got the typical "oh, we dont see a recall for this... but I will log this info." I just ordered the part on ebay and I'm gonna try it myself. Is this easy to fix?
Same thing. Mazda CX5 touring. Won't shut off. Thanks for all the posts. Seems that this isn't an isolated problem. Calling Mazda just now: 800.222.5500.
For those with this issue, and who aren't ready to have it fixed, try this: when you stop move the shifter to Park fairly firmly, wait ten seconds or so, then hit the Power button. I've been having some good luck with it.
Experiencing the same problem with my 2014 cx-5. Here's where you can contact for a recall: Safercar.gov You can also report a vehicle safety issue to NHTSA online at our vehicle safety Web site: www.safercar.gov. Select “File a Complaint” within the Defects and Recalls section of the home page. The information you submit via the Web site is recorded in VOQ format, entered into our consumer complaint database, and provided to our technical staff for evaluation. When you fill out a VOQ online, you will be given the option of checking a box to authorize or not authorize the release of your personal identifiers to the manufacturer of the alleged defective product you own. Again, while you are not required to provide such authorization, doing so can sometimes help facilitate the recall process. U.S. Mail To report a safety complaint to NHTSA by mail, send your letter to: U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Office of Defects Investigation (NVS-210) 1200 New Jersey Avenue SE Washington, DC 20590
I just called Mazda USA- they said part is probably just worn out and since I’m past the warranty on my 2014 Mazda CX-5 it isn’t covered and there isn’t a recall at this time. They suggested I call my Mazda dealer and get it fixed- so in other words- I got no where with them!!
I have the exact same issue with my 2014 Mazda CX-5. I have called Mazda and reported this issue. I just got some other recalls fixed this morning and a quote on how much it will be to fix this issue with it not cutting off. It’s going to be about $375. It has gotten so bad, that I keep a pair of pliers in my car to disconnect the battery when it does this. I emailed Mazda and sent them the link to this post, and demanded a recall. I will not be paying almost $400 to fix an issue with my car that is not my fault, and that other mazda owners are having! It’s not right!
