check engine light

I got a 99 dakota 5.2L  from my dad for my son to drive. Check engine light is on an is running very rough. It wont idle under a load, surging really bad, hesitates, stalls and when the accelerator is pushed to the floor there is nothing there. I checked out a lot of forums on this problem. Figured out that it was probably the tps but to it to autozone to check the codes and they said it was a bad map sensor. Replaced the map sensor and it seemed to help a little but didnt fix the problem. It doesnt sputter and backfire anymore but the other problems are still there and check engine light is still on. I cleaned the throttle body too. Thought it might be the egr valve but found out this model doesnt have one. Is it the tps?

Get the codes checked again. Maybe do plugs and wires

Yeah plugs and wires are a good start also a new distributor cap wouldn't hurt.

FWIW, I have the same truck and it was bucking like a bronco. Turns out it was just a frayed wiring harness and one cylinder was on/off.
