how would you know if it has rear end brake pads or shoe drum?

I have a 2013 Sliverado 4×4 just had oil changed but I noticed just now as I was stopping at the red light the oil gauge went from 40 to 0. WTH? Is that Normal? And Yes as I started to drive off after I pulled over to look under truck it went back up but not all the way to 40 like before.
