What does AFM stand for?

Asked by Aug 25, 2014 at 10:32 AM about the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT Ext. Cab 4WD

Question type: General

I know it is the system that turns 4 cylinders on and off.  But, what does it stand for?
I want to know how much it might cost me to have it turned off completely.

Active Fuel Management. Horable idea now. And back in the 1980's when Government Motors called it 4-6-8.

Yes, it was a Cadillac exclusive in 1981. My Sister had it on her '81 Eldorado. It was the V8 368 cubic inch. Cadillac called it the V8-6-4. Her's worked fine but most didn't. It really did improve gas mileage when it worked. I'd suggest leaving it alone. You're probably still under warranty. HTH. -Jim

It's more a question. I just bought a 2011 Silverado V6 5.3L Crew Cab, and when I get to about 60 mph my truck starts to do this rev or something is switching on or off in the engine! The rpm's are going up slightly! Is this the AFM causing this?
