Question type: Car Customization

I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee sport. Under 200k miles. No
major issues. I am second owner, 1st owner was my aunt.
She garage kept it, and never left the pavement. The jeep is
in great shape inside and out. I love the vehicle, but I
commute a ton, and gas mileage is an issue. I want to
know what the best options for engine swaps are to gain
the most gas mileage. I don't need to upgrade the power
too much. All the threads I read want to do a V8 or
Cummins diesel, or something of the like. I know I am crazy,
but my off roading days are probably behind me for the
most part. I just like the look and feel of the jeep. I want
something that takes the old body style into the modern
day. The current engine is great with no issues. I intend to
sell the I6 4.0L engine to help with the cost of the engine
swap. I don't have a ton of knowledge, and will have to get
help with most of the work. This may be a crazy dream and
a stupid idea, but any help would be appreciated.

Ed9626, I totally disagree with you. These jeeps are sought after, and hard to find in good condition. They stopped making the body style in 2001, and now they only make the soccer mom looking body styles. I have owned several of these jeeps, and they are great vehicles. I don't know why you think I need to "leave my childhood behind." I really don't see how that has anything to do with trying to make a classic jeep body style work in today's modern world. I like the design and style, and the car is in great shape. I have no plans on getting my money out of it, because I plan on keeping it. Investing in a new car doesn't mean I would get better quality, nor does it mean I would get any return if I sold the vehicle. I wanted to get ideas for the project, not be told I am a child. Thanks for the input, but I am going in a different direction
