1994 cadillac fleetwood broughman 5.7 LT1 V8, starter spins but engine does not crank
car has been running perfect since purchased approx. 6 months ago. When I turn key, starter spins but engine does not fire. Sometimes starter only spins, nothing else happens.
Sounds like one of two things. A bad starter or broken teeth on the flywheel. When you crank the engine the starter solenoid (little round thing on top of the starter where the positive (+) battery cable bolts on) pushes the starter drive gear out to engage the flywheel gear to turn the engine. If the starter drive gear isn't being pushed out it will just spin. If you have broken teeth on the flywheel gear the starter drive gear will come out but have nothing to engage because the flywheel gear teeth are missing. To be sure, remove the starter and the flywheel inspection cover. Once you know the flywheel teeth are good you can go ahead and replace the starter. HTH. -Jim
