How do I improve gas mileage on my 2010 F250 Super Duty.

Asked by Vettester May 25, 2015 at 09:06 AM about the 2010 Ford F-250 Super Duty XL Crew Cab 4WD

Question type: General

I have an F-250 Super Duty with the 331 gas engine. It develops plenty of power to pull our shorty 5th wheel, but mpg sucks, literally. I bought it a year ago, and put in a new engine, I can't seem to get better than 9-10 regardless of in town, or hiway. It came with larger tires, and I suspect that to be a major participant. With returning to the factory suggested rubber, and maybe octane boosters, are there any other ideas for improving mpg? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the key is to get more air in and exhaust out so a catback system for the exhaust to minimize restriction and a k@n cold air intake and you could also get a controller to help with your mileage

Sell it and buy a diesel. Gas engines aren't designed for towing MPG. Thier RPM powerband range is 3,000- 5,500rpm where a diesel is 950-2500 rpm. The higher your rpm at given power number the more that engine will drink. You have to determine if you're owing frequent enough to get the right truck or live with bad mpg while towing to save while doing anything else.

Stock tires will help. I get 10 to 11 mpg hauling a 35' travel trailer with my F150 with the 5.4 but that was with stock tires and not exceeding 60 mph.
