2010 Hyundai Sonata won't start

Asked by GGGOz May 27, 2021 at 08:13 PM about the 2010 Hyundai Sonata SE FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2010 Hyundai Sonata that won't start.  I just get a click when I turn the ignition.  I changed the battery and starter but still nothing.  When I turn the ignition, the starter gets hot as well, so I know it's getting power.  Any ideas?

Is the engine seized? See if you can turn over engine by hand, you turn the crankshaft. If you can turn crankshaft it isn't seized. You could remove serpentine belt and spark plugs, then see if starter motor will crank the engine. Hope you didn't damage the starter motor when it got hot. Watch spark plug holes, if it cranks w/o plugs, to see if fluid comes out? If fluid comes out, hydrostatic lock. Can you check how starter drive gear engages the flywheel? Flywheel ok?

I will check to see if I can turn over the motor. It would be strange if it were seized since this is a daily driver. The only other thing I can think would be wrong is a bad electrical connection, maybe a bad ground or rusted terminal. I think the starter motor is getting current since it’s getting hot though, so that makes me think maybe not. Thanks for your response.

Ok so I found out that the ac pulley was jammed which was not allowing the engine to turn over. The AC hasn't been working for about a year, but I didn't realize it could potentially affect the other engine components. So a follow up question. I can't seem to find an AC bypass pulley for my model. Is my only option to go find another compressor from a junkyard or something to bolt on? THanks!
