ABS symptoms with all-season tires vs. snow tires.

Question type: General

At the recent snowfall, I carefully applied the brakes on a slushy paved road at less than
20 miles/hour. The brakes started to grab on-and-off and I was told that it is a typical
symptom of an ABS system. Shaky and scary.!
My question: if I install 4 snow tires will that eliminate this ABS shake on a slick surface?

ABS is designed to detect wheel speed differences and release brake pressure to the wheel that is slipping so it may regain traction. What you hear and feel is normal operation. I suggest that you take the vehicle to a wide open space where the surface is slippery and practice with your ABS system. You may not be comfortable with it now but when it saves your butt in a panic stop in the snow you'll be thankful for it. The car's fine - you need to adjust.
