2008 Saturn Vue A/C whining noise

The A/C has started making a whining noise when driving.  It is very loud and
annoying.  It does not stop if I turn the A/C off.  It only stops when the car is
turned off for awhile.  If I do not turn on the A/C, the noise does not start.

Is it a screeching, like a belt noise? Does it blow cold air from the vents, as expected, while this noise in occurring? How old are the accessory belt(s)? Have you checked under the hood to get a visual on the source of the noise?
