why does no one ever seem to finish answering some questions on here? I'm having the same problem - the computer needs to be reset after installing a new used engine and no one is answering HOW do you reset the computer? I've found basic code resetting for the dashboard lights, but it doesn't say how to reset the whole computer... sigh.

First as long as you replace the same engine and the harness is the same ,you dont have to do anything to the computer,Check your battery, starter and if all ok.it is possible the security sys. is not aligned with the engine ecu. If you have another key try that if not you need someone with bmw scanne to reset the ews(security sys.) Let me know your progress.

I bought a 2005 x5 e53 at an auction a week ago. I suspect they disconnected the battery and only reconnected it to drive it through the auction line. The air suspension isn't working and some of the dash lights aren't functioning. Should I reset the system by doing as Jeffreylance77 suggested in another post: "... disconnect the neg. batter cable under the spare tire in the back ... let sit for 5 min, then, lightly touch neg cable to the already connected pos terminal cable. You should hear a slight "bump" that's the reset. Reconnect the neg cable?" Will this work without damaging the system? I hate touching a negative cable to the positive one ... just seems wrong!
