my car runs hot then it shuts  down.  I was told my spark plugs are not firing.  What is the name of that [art that I need to replace

This would have nothing to do with the spark plugs! It will be your thermostat is failing not opening and closing like it should. Just buy you a new Thermostat and its 2 bolts to change and you should be good. :)
