Have a 08' Ford Escape with 4wd. No switch on dash. How does it engage/disengage?

the 4 wheel drive in your vehicle is not selectable like most. Instead it is part of your traction control system. When the computer sees the front wheels start to slip it starts giving power to the back wheels as well to compensate. Some vehicles with this type system allow you to lock it into 4wd at low speeds (<20mph) for severe conditions.
