2007 Gran Marquis overheating

Asked by Ripkarl Aug 04, 2018 at 03:42 PM about the 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis GS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I have quite literally replaced everything on the cooling system except the
Radiator, did have it flushed and was told it "looked good" . So my fan does
not come on but I directly wired it to my battery and it does work , and still
she starts to over heat. Not just in traffic but also will do it on the fwy at
speed. Then as quickly as the gauge rises, it falls back to normal.  I'm getting
told to check some sensors?  what sensors haha?

The most misunderstood function of any cooling system is pressure ... Basic Physics 101 >> I Water boils at 212 f at sea level (I know it's~~boring boring but follow) However , water cannot boil if it's under pressure. Steam won't cool anything so it's essential to keep the coolant under pressure so it stays a liquid, It's obvious that if your engine temperature can climb to 220 degrees (8 degrees above boiling) that it must be kept under pressure or it will boil away. If there is not a perfect seal in the cooling system ... the water will boil ,, and it can boil very slowly so you don't even see it until so little coolant is remaining it boils BIG TIME. The culprit may be at the radiator ... specifically the mating seal between the radiator cap and the neck that it attaches too. Check the mating surface on the radiator ,,, is it smooth? Look at the rubber seal on the cap itself is it soft? If you have any doubts at all then invest a few bucks in a new cap.

The sensors are called thermistors and they go to the cars computer to control the fan in addition to the engines algorithm (fuel mix, timing etc) For some reason my larger post is being delayed so hang on .. I may have put your finger on the overheat problem
