Why does it look like coffee coming out of my car?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently changed my water pump on a mercury montego. I have had so
many issues with this vehicle. I am now just trying to figure out the problem
and sell it.
I replaced the alternator twice. I also bought a brand new battery. I replaced
the water pump and fluids. The car now will turn on only with a jump. Even
with the brand new battery. There is a small hole in the hose at the bottom.
Of what I don't know. I can see light brown fluid coming out and lesking fast.
It sorta looks wet along the oultside of my engine block. I was told possibly
be a mechanic that my fluids could have mixed?? I had issues with the car
overheating and not keeping fluid. I wasn't aware of a leak . But was not
keeping fluid. The car will not stay on. I have people telling me I might need a
new engine, I could need a new thermostat housing.. ? I am just not sure and
would like to know what went wrong and if it's worth fixing before I put more
money into this vehicle? Any Montego experts out there?

If you don't know how to work on cars, don't own one this old, especially a POS like Mercury..... This car seems like most sold on ebay. For your next purchase, which is gonna be real soon, have a mechanic review the car prior to purchase. and if you want the best reliability, stay with Toyota.

This vehicle is 16 years old and, in my opinion, not worth putting another penny into it! Most likely when you overheated it the head gasket blew or the head warped. Especially if it's an aluminum head. It's done! Either trade it in as is or junk it! The coolant, assuming it is coolant, that's leaking is either contaminated with engine oil, exhaust gasses, or both. Pull the oil dipstick and see if you have white milky stuff on it. If you do, it's definitely going to be the head gasket and/or the head. By contrast, last weekend I replaced the radiator in my 2003 S10 Pick Up with 307,000 miles on it. The coolant that came out of it was clean! There were a few particles of dirt in the bottom of my drain pan but that was it. To my knowledge the coolant has never been flushed and replaced. It is a retired delivery vehicle from my job that I bought from the company 12 years ago. It's my beater and my philosophy for it is if it works, don't fix it! I put the old coolant back in and topped it off. If there was other things going on I'd have had dirty, rusty, coolant, just like you. So, again, get rid of this vehicle as is. It's time to move on! Hope that helps! Jim
