Brake light remains on. (In dashboard light)

Asked by cantari Dec 28, 2010 at 09:39 AM about the 2007 Kia Optima EX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello,

My brake light recently came on and it has gone off a few times, but not it remains on all the time.  I checked my brake fluid and it was good.  Is there anything else I should try before I take it to the dealer??

Thank you!

Do you have an ABS/ESC warning lamp one? I've seen animals chew through the wires to the brake fluid pressure switch. I haven't ever seen the switch itself be bad, but there's a first time for everything. If the brake fluid is well above the low mark (at least 1/3 of the way to the full mark) and you don't see any damage to the wiring at the master cylinder. I'd say that it's time to go see your local Kia dealer.

This maybe helpful, a few years late for some though. I had the same problem a few years back, brake lights on all the time & no cruise control. Check the switch located up on the brake pedal, it may be broken. It controls both the brake lights & cuts the cruise off when the brakes are applied.

noticed the cruise control was NOT working, and that the brake lights remained on, and a small round disk with a center "pearl" the whole thing is the color of a butterscotch lifesaver, broken in pieces, on the floor under the brake. Hmmm? Hard plastic, but easily broken is many pieces. Wonder what this is? I told my husband to pull the fuse for the brakes, so it doesn't end up draining my battery.

Jaslady, you got it right. Brake lights would not go out. Checked the floor under the brake and there was the broken yellow life saver. Thank you for posting. I just wedged the broken piece between the brake arm and the assembly so the lights would go off for the night. Taking it to the dealer (or Autozone) tomorrow to get that do-hickey replaced.

After superglue didn't hold it in place, 2 dimes glued together did! .20 cents and fixed! It you ever notice a dime on the floor, it came off, (so be aware). So far it is holding, and working!
