Worth Buying

Question type: General

I'm buying a 2004 Buick with 112k miles from a dealership. The asking price is $ 1800.00 which comes to $ 2239 including taxes, registration and tag. I don't know much about cars and I've been disappointed before when buying from a dealer. The vehicle looks in good shape but will need since cleaning and minor repairs. Is that a good deal?

It's not a bad deal per se, of course we can't see the car ourselves so can't really give you a good assessment. Check the blue book value online, http://www.edmunds.com/ , http://www.kelleybluebook.com/ , http://www.nadaguides.com/ , then deduct potential repairs from that. The big concern at 112K is the timing belt, if it hasn't been replaced it may need to be soon, and that's a big expense. It may well go another 50 or even 100K miles on it, but you never know, it could go tomorrow. Check what the service life is and whether it's been replaced. The transmission should also have been serviced, cycled with fluid/filter change, if not, then that is another 150-200 cost to anticipate.

Yes timing belt needs researched. History on service records.

If this is one of those seedy used car lots run by CraaazzzY Ernie or one of his buddies be careful. Better yet Run Away!

Thank you folks for your input. I'm about to buy a service report for it. I'll keep the timing belt and transmission in mind.

2004 would have a 3800 V6 and the timing chain on those cars will go to 250K in some cases. See if the dealer will give you at least a 90 day warranty. As soon as you buy the car ask people you know about good repair shops. Also if you set aside a little each month in a "car repair kitty" you will have a fund to fix things that go wrong. The LeSabre is a good car and you should get good service.

I just purchased a 2003 with 91000 original miles just needed some front and rear brakes and fix the horn the things Immaculate runs like a Cadillac smooth on the road and the parts are readily available if I need them it's a good buy plus you can't beat the reliability of the 3800 V6 motor everything's that's accessible
