93 Lumina 3.1L will not start.

Asked by Mar 26, 2015 at 10:34 PM about the 1993 Chevrolet Lumina 4 Dr Euro Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

will not crank, turn the key and there is nothing, no click, nothing. Tried to jump start and nothing. Lights come on strong. Was told it could be transmission sensor, was also told that the battery cables might not be making a good connection.

If it were the battery or the battery cable connections the lights would dim badly or go out when you try to start it. Sounds like a bad starter or a bad neutral safety switch. Get a hammer and hit the starter a few times. If it then starts the starter is bad. Try starting it in neutral. Run the shifter through all the gears a few times quickly then try starting it in park and neutral. If it starts the neutral safety switch is bad. HTH. - Jim

if it is the neutral safety switch, how hard is that to replace?

You'll need to know if you have a 3 or 4 speed transmission. There's a notation on rockauto.com's listing for it that it mounts to the transmission case. Might be a little tricky. Jump on their website and check out the pictures of it. That way you can find it easier on the car. HTH. -Jim
